Every enterprise pushing AI adoption right now is having the same two conversations. The first is about innovation: how do we get our teams using AI, how do we capture use cases, how do we move faster. The second is about control: how do we keep sensitive data from leaking, how do we prove compliance, how do we satisfy the audit committee.
The problem is that most organizations are treating these as separate conversations. They shouldn't be.
Right now, the typical enterprise AI environment looks something like this. Developers are calling OpenAI or Anthropic directly. Guardrails are ad-hoc. Prompt redaction is a collection of homegrown hacks. There's no centralized visibility into what data is being sent to which models, through which channels, with what protections. This isn't a theoretical risk. It's a gap that exists today in companies that are otherwise sophisticated about security and compliance. SOC 2, PCI, HIPAA, emerging AI regulation, internal audit committees. The compliance frameworks these organizations already operate under weren't designed for a world where every application can make outbound calls to a large language model. But that's the world we're in now, and the regulatory environment is catching up fast.
Here's the thing that makes this hard. The instinct at most companies is to respond to this risk by slowing down. Block the tools. Restrict access. Create approval committees. The sharpest version of this approach is DevSecOps-native: you don't ship AI to production unless it passes security policy. Not monitoring after the fact, but gating at deployment. That shifts the posture from reactive to proactive.
And it starts narrow. Audit and enforce LLM calls in production apps. But it naturally expands into AI risk scoring, vendor and model usage dashboards, industry-specific policy packs, and red-team testing automation. For organizations that handle sensitive client data at scale, across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks, the sensitivity profile makes this less of an option and more of an inevitability.
The companies that figure this out early won't just be more compliant. They'll be the ones that actually move fastest, because they removed the fear that was slowing everyone else down.
The question worth asking yourself is a simple one: if an auditor walked in tomorrow and asked you to prove how every AI call in your enterprise is being governed, what would you show them?
